At the edge of the Ituri forest and a day’s walk from Virunga National Park’s snowcapped Rwenzori mountains, the 900 farmers of Kawa Kanzururu are collaborating in an economic model for peace and stability in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Virunga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is threatened by poaching, deforestation, and armed conflict. Choosing this limited coffee directly supports the Virunga Alliance, providing essential jobs, protecting biodiversity, and guarding critically endangered mountain gorillas. Virunga National Park is home to half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, an endangered species. Rangers work tirelessly to protect the land and animals against poaching, illegal logging, and conflict. Their lives are in constant threat. A minimum of 30% of the park’s revenues is invested in development projects defined by the community.
Higher Grounds is proud to offer exceptional coffees from around the world by building lasting partnerships with small-scale growers, working directly with them to ensure a top-quality product. Through those close relationships and ongoing community projects both in our local area and globally, we provide coffee drinkers with an excellent product and the opportunity to engage in a cycle that begins at, and returns to, our partners in coffee-growing regions.
